Hi Wendy, he was also my great grandfather.(I put the names wrong in Geni and can't work out how to change them ) my Grand mother was martha Johanna broodryk. I believe martha was around 20 years younger than Charles. They met in South Africa and left soon afterwards for England where they ran a pub around the manchester area. They had 3 children Judith coleman (my grand mother) and Lillian and Hazlitt. We have reason to believe he may have been married before. Who is your grandmother ???? Maybe we can work out some more details together

My Grandmother was Lillian Coleman, will send you exact dates later today, we never knew about your Grandmother and only found out details via Judith Kirkman accidentally. Robyn is my sister

I am still searching for information regarding Charles William Coleman. As I have no proof of birth certificates except for his entry in the 1911 census in manchester that says his birth was natal South Africa. I have found an entry in the South African archives the he was charged for an offense in Africa in 1915, knowing he fled South Africa earlier with wife, he may have had a reason to change is birth details... I have been wondering if a birth I found in family search LDS might be in fact his . Birth 1865 27 oct. christening 24 march 1867. Whittles ford Cambridge . The only thing I know he had a sister Charlotte bit can't find any record. Can anyone please help me on this?

Thanks Wendy, I have been searching all morning and getting frustrated. ( We are sailing at the moment) Can't find any details of Charlotte Coleman also.... Found a mote from my grandmother of an address 19 jacksons row manchester.... Not sure if it means Judith Coleman or Charles was born there. The old pub still exists.. I can't find any other information on it.. I believe charles parents owned/ran pubs in England so this might be where they originated. I can't find any link to Pieter Mann or Manns either. I need to find out how to get original birth certificates.. And would love to find Charles death certificate as I read that they usually have the most information on them...

Hi Wendy . You obviously keep thinking about is same as I do.... There are a few loose ends. My mum was reading off a sheet that Judith (gran) wrote. Some of the things mum read were not right. I keep thinking about it and the dates are all wrong. I'm going to have a good look at it tomorrow... Do you have any other info other than what mum gave you ?

No the only information we ever knew was Martha'a name, the fact that mum was the spitting image of Martha when she was young. the South African connection and that my grandmother had a brother name unknown also the fact that my grandmother hated her mother, we never knew any more until your gran sent Robyn details. Must send you some photos.

Robyn, it wasn't charles that died in the black flu in England. It was in cape town Africa it was one of Martha's brothers.

Date: 14 September, 1918
The first cases of an unusually severe and deadly strain of influenza, popularly called Spanish Flu or 'Great Flu', were diagnosed on this date in Durban. This started the worst pandemic ever in South Africa. Of a total population of just over 6 million at the time, nearly half contracted the disease, while close to 140,000 died within a few weeks. The disease spread throughout the entire country and often whole families were ill or dying, with nobody left to care for them. Doctors and nurses did their best, but were too few to treat the ill. The Black and Coloured sections of the population were most severely affected, especially the mineworkers, who suffered dreadfully. The death-rate under Whites was also unusually high. Deaths were usually due to secondary bacterial infections, causing pneumonia. As this was before modern antibiotic treatment was available, there was no effective cure. The epidemic peaked in October. The virus caused the death of 25 to 40 million people throughout the world.
