Does anyone know anything about Thomas Dial? There are many Dial/Dials/Dyal in Eastern KY and SW West VA. Possibly they descend from Thomas Dial? My husband is a Dials.
I have found the following:
1. Dial is really Doyal ? 2. The Dyal family came to PA as Quarkers, then to Cape Fear area of NC, then to SC. The town they came to was Williamsburg, which was a land speculation devised with two other towns to be a buffer on the Western frontier from the Indians. Thomas' two other brothers were already married before they came to Williamsburg, but Thomas (the Boonesborough Thomas's grandfather?) married a "Mary" who was already in Williamsburg. Only Thomas left for Ft Boonesborough with or without Mary (who may have stayed in a Cumberland Settlement with other wives and children.) Of course to also build Ft Boonesborough. Thomas I, II and Thomas in Boonesborough was possibly III? 3. I have found only one mention of Thomas who accompanied two other men, who left the Fort to fight Indians. They returned. 4. I currently live in Lexington, KY and have been to EKU and read the Chenault Letters. These letters are mostly about land and the Chenault Family. 5. In BRAVE DEFENDERS OF FORT BOONESBOROUGH, written by Judge William Chenault is on microfilm at EKU. He only mentions the name Thomas Dial once and that is it. The article is from The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Sunday Morning , August 28, 1898. 5. There are other mentions of Dial's, but may not be descended from Thomas of Boonesborough. A John Dyal was a famous Indian fighter and was at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, etc. and was with Col. Clark (later Gen). There is a Draper Manuscript of 16 pages (a good read!) about John's adventures. I don't think he has anything to do with Thomas Dial at Boonesborough, but maybe could be a nephew???
Anyway, I have been looking and looking for information about Thomas Dial. Anybody else looking??
