Polish Portal at Geni..?

Great idea. You can start one and consult with some who have active portals such as Private User or Sharon Doubell or Private User. Many have a portal in English for people of X ancestry and one in the native language, depending upon the situation.

I have been working on Jewish families in the Polish-Jewish Commonwealth just prior to and post its dissolution.

Thank you Hatte. I really think it's a good idea. I'm also thinking about creating two portals: 1. International Polish Portal and 2. Polski portal.

All information can be gathered at one place - people collaborating on similar areas, information about Polish emigration to US and other countries, projects about Polish Jews or Auschwitz, not to mention particular villages' or cities' genealogies, along with the royal bloodlines etc. Could be worth it. I'll check existing language portals and try to establish a Polish version soon.

The folks I linked to and likely others have very good ideas about how to organize country portals. I can help if you need it with the formatting or lay out.

The portal can also be an umbrella project as you mentioned, to projects on specific regions or ethnic groups. I have projects on what was the old Suwalki Gubernia and old Lomza Gubernia, a lot of which is now in Poland. I also have a project on the old Trakai Gubernia from the larger Commonwealth, which is in Lithuania. Suwalki, Lomza, and Trakai earlier made up an Augustow province which is why I think we see lots of connections between families in those three areas.

I don't know what it was like for Christians, but with rare exceptions, Jews stayed and married within their administrative area. So knowing the administrative area and looking at families in adjoining towns is important to understanding one's ancestors.

One of the most important sections there is the News section where we can inform about important changes in Geni in their own language, often with a link to the project discussions for details and to invite users to discuss the changes.
For this part Andrzej might be needed because curators usually get a pre-announcement of changes or have had them available for beta-testing for a while.

So far there's not much there, but I believe it can grow fast. Together with Andrzej Hennel, with whom I hope to cooperate, I believe we can make it work.

We try to 'catch' all new South African users as they come onto Geni, and send them a welcome letter and an invite to the portal. It works well to get people working togeher from the beginning, but also to give them people to go to if they need help 'learning the ropes.'

Sharon Doubell - every help and hints would be more than needed. I believe that Polish genealogy scene is a big one, but not neccesarily yet represented in Geni. I hope it can change, especially that I see a will for cooperation.

So, it's officially started. So far I invited some users (there are 21 of them as we speak, so it's quite nice as for the first few hours of a project) and there's not much more. However, with the guidance of Andrzej Hennel and yourself, I'm pretty sure it can be a project of grat importance in Geni.
