Quote from The "King of geni":
Marking that the research so far has concluded that the mother(s) of the children is unknown with a NN profile is a genealogical fact, but I prefer to use ?? because it does not show up in search or generates profile matches and works for all languages/cultures. Not so many know what Nomen nescio, which NN is abbreviations for means.
Leaving out the profile complete could just tell that the line is not researched/added yet or someone have cut a connection.
Secondly: Having ?? placeholder profiles saves you a lot of work when merging profiles.
End of quote.
Do you agree?
Yes, profiles named ??, nn NN, and other variations are called placeholder-profiles because they are placed there to make merging of profiles easier when it comes to parent-conflicts and to show that there has been a process on the profile and that the name hasn't been found yet. Instead of a blank (not added) husband or wife which gives you no information at all.
I thought you knew what question you asked in you first message since you ask us if we agree about this practice. And now it looks like you didn't know what your quote was about.
To answer the question of whether to make place holder profiles in Geni - however they are named - (??, unk, NN, FNU, MNU, etc.) there are these technology issues to keep in mind.
- most of these markers are excluded from the match algorithm
- as a result, a duplicate profile added with ?? parents by one person may not match with the same profile entered by another person
- searching on the name rather than using the tree match service would then be more necessary
John, wives 2 and 3 are probably placeholder-profiles for Private and Private since they are set to private and therefore are impossible to merge even with a Pro membership. So Marion probably made those profiles because the profiles she wanted access to was made private.
But I'm pretty sure, that if you just ask Marion why she made them, she will answer you. That is probably the easiest way to get the answer you are looking for.
I cooperate with many people on Geni, and I have never had any problems until I started cooperating with 2 specifik persons (no names yet).
Within minutes, the 2 persons started changing names on female profiles. I asked them why they did that and got the answer that it was disrespectfull and degrading that womens surnames was the same as their husbands (default from geni). Further they said that it was acording to 1 specific curator that they did that, and that was not the way to do it on geni.
Of course we contacted this curator and asked what he was doing. His answer was that we were making fakeprofiles because of theese names (we still got theese answers saved).
I got even a phonecall from one of the persons where she told me that if I did not do as she said, we would get banned like they had done to another person on geni (she also told us who it was)
That is why we blocked the persons involved and started making as many profiles as possible private and invited our coopertors to familigroup, so that they stlll would be able to see and edit the profiles.
This is shortly the case so far.
I can't understand how 2 "ladies" and one curator can deside how I work and write the profiles on geni.
Sorry about my english
Entering names correctly on Geni! http://www.geni.com/projects/Coalition-for-the-Standardization-of-G...
Thank you Mr. Eldon Clark, but as I have read this, there is nothing about placeholder-profiles.
The 2 profiles in question has no information other the numbers.
And this coalition does not give anyone the right to alter profiles and / or calling profiles "fake" because they don't agree how the names are written.
Private User I do not usually use placeholders, but they can be useful at times. Sometimes they are carried to extremes like the one I came across just yesterday. There was a complete family of "unknown", both sexes, probably 20 names and 3 generations. No reason that I could see but the manager must have had a reason. It was better than one like the "8 other sons and daughters" profile I have seen.
I do alter profiles sometimes as I did yesterday. There was a family where all the spouses last and birth names were their spouses when the birth names were known. I didn't make major changes, just corrections.
I agree it is wrong to call a profile "fake" because you don't agree how the names are written. It may be wrong from your standpoint but not the person who entered it. I have had that happen to me when I entered a married name as last name when that was the custom for that time period and the use of a married name was at one time legally required.
The key word here is sometime.
But when some people do it systematicly and on hundreds of profile, it smells like harassment.
The issues I bring on theese debattes are the result of the defence of a person who is doing just that, with the blessing from a curator who attacks our work instead.
The basic reason for this debat is to get more user and cutators aware of the harassment from some users and bullying from this curator before this curator gets me and / or my wife banned from Geni.
I think I can speak for most curators in saying there is no bullying. What you may perceive as bulling is probably cultural differences. I tend to be terse and factual and since I am not a typist my messages tend to be short. It probably took me 15 minutes to compose my previous message.
Curators can not get anyone banned from Geni, but like any other user they can report a user to Customer Service who will investigate.
These disputes with this curator have been a long ongoing matter and we have recieved numerous accusations from this person.
I have already written about this to misconduct@geni.com.
I am very sorry that you are maybe not able to read the debate "Chikane". If you could read danish / norwegian , you would be able to se some of my points.
I can and will not accept this from a curator, that is suposed to help users.
Luckely all the corespondance with this curator is saved on geni.
