Is there any way to add an event to the recent activity or post news through the API? I'd like to give the option for a user to "share" something they learned or derived from the app. This is common on Facebook apps, allowing it to post to the timeline, which promotes the activity and the app.

Nope.
You should however be able to post news by analyzing the web page source code for that, but that is in my opinion way out of line.
