Dear Fellow Curators,
It is indeed great that we will now be able to take up the offer on carrying out DNA tests at discounted rates. I had been meaning to have one done awhile ago and now have my chance. I would however appreciate guidance as to which test would be the best and which would include the paternal and maternal lines.
Looking forward to hearing from you all.
Regards
Jules Fausto M de Sa

Thanks. I seem to recollect my cousin in Switzerland did the same for his redearch into his ancestry. He has written a book relating to his findings.

The YDNA test goes straight back from you, since you are a guy, thru your father - to your father's father's father, etc. The MtDNA tests go straight back thru your mother (both guys and gals can do that one) - to your mother's mother's mother, etc.

If you are interested in all your relatives, including cousins not restricted to just those straight back (and then forward) thru strict maternal or paternal line - then Family Finder is the best test. If you have a great paper trail thru 6th cousin, it will probably not add anything. If you are hoping to discover/verify folks as second or third cousin, it is definitely the one I would recommend. It might or might not be helpful for 4th or 5th cousin - I believe they say there is about a 50% chance that two fourth cousins will show that relationship thru DNA testing - but about a 90% chance two third cousins will show it. (Your DNA is half from your mother, half from you father; your father's is half from his mother, half from his father -- but - the half you get from your father is probably not exactly evenly split between that from his mother, that from his father -- and even if it were, it probably would not be the same set that went to another of his children -- hence the diminishing percentages.)

i have done the family finder test, i have 11 pages of matches and only one confirmed relative so far. its hit and miss, but americans have a lot better chance of getting matches then anywhere else

I have already tested with FamilyTreeDNA. So - a few questions:
1) Can I use Geni's rates to purchase a test for a relative (or someon I think is maybe a relative)?
2) Are the results for the tests purchased thru Geni included in a separate DataBase, or in the results with all those who tested thru FamilyTreeDNA, or both?
3) Aside from price, are there any differences between testing thru Geni and testing thru FamilyTreeDNA?

Hi Private User,

1. Yes, you can purchase a test for a relative.

2. The results purchased through Geni are kept with Family Tree DNA only.

3. In short, no. Geni users can purchase Family Tree DNA tests at really low prices, but the actual test and the results is between you and Family Tree DNA.

Private User@Amanda - Thanks much!

Can you give us any idea how long these special prices will be in effect? (either until, or at least until, or ??)

Also - don't see any special prices being offered for upgrades of existing FamilyTreeDNA kits (eg, add Famiily Finder to one that just has yDNA and/or MtDNA tests or add one of the MtDNA or YDNA tests to one that just has Family Finder or upgrades to MtDNA tests or etc.). Any chance those will be offered?

Based on what Amanda wrote: "the results is between you and Family Tree DNA" I would conclude that such upgrades can only be purchased directly from Family Tree DNA since it require knowledge of what you test you already have and are bound to your login there.

FOR MT-DNA TESTING
Please read:
http://arvegods.blogspot.no/2011/08/mtdna-tests.html

The Full Sequence FMS is the one needed to use the test for genealogical purposes. It is also WAY cheaper to order the FMS straight away instead of doing it step by step.

I have already made a request for a DNA Test. Unfortunately I pressed the Confirmation button three times in error. Please send me just one kit not three. I have sent a ticket to the Geni Team.

Private User,

We have refunded the duplicate orders. Please see your help ticket for more details.

Thank you.

As mention by Private User if interested in mtDNA I would recomend the Full Sequence FMS. I made the mistake of thinking I would just upgrade later without taking into the account of the price to upgrade. So Instead of upgrading kit tested to HVR2, I just tested another sibling with FMS which only came out to being $20 more then it would of cost me to upgrade original kit. mtDNA is the only test that has the pricey upgrade, so research each level of testing and what your over all goal is before purchasing lower level of testing

Private User,

Upgrades have to be done via FTDNA's website. You need to be logged into your kit to do an upgrade. I already have my Y-DNA done to 67 markers and in the next few months, I will be ugrading to 111 markers.

Apparently, Family Tree DNA is lowering their prices on Y DNA 12 at $ 39.

According to info I have seen , both the $39 for Y DNA 12 and the low prices thru Geni are both Sales effective thru Feb. 28, 2013.

If you ordered test thru Geni, you should be able to go log on to FamilyTreeDNA via your Kit number and order the upgrade for YDNA12 at $39 if you didn't include YDNA in your original order - that sale is good on both new kit and upgrade. But again, it is (or at least was) saying price good thru Feb 28, 2013.

I ordered one of these tests, and very shortly after,
in my e-mail, I received a message from Geni (at no-reply) - Title/Subject says "Receipt for your recent Geni purchase" - look inside, there is NO message, no attachment.

Is this typical?? Shouldn't a receipt actually have some details? Or??

Private User I'm not sure what happened to the email that was sent to you, but the order was placed successfully and i will have a copy of the receipt sent to you.

Lois, - what is your language setting?

Just received this e mail "Your Family Tree DNA test kit for Eldon Clark was received today." I think it should take about two weeks for results.

Private User - Thanks, Turns out it was a bit stranger than I thought. I didn't notice that the new message also said it was from no-reply@geni.com (this time from "Geni Stage" <no-reply@geni.com> ) -- so I hit reply, to explain that once again, no details, no attachment with info - AND THEN once I hit reply, the reply filled in "Geni Help" <orders@geni.com> in the "To:" section, AND displayed an actual message (below the heading for for message I was replying to) with details of the purchase. But only in the Reply Box (and then in saved Draft) - original still no info; I double-checked if I had somehow failed to scroll down - but no!

This is rather strange. Who would think to hit "Reply" for a message from "no-reply", expecting it to auto-fill the "TO:" with a different address? And definitely would not expect that to magically display a message that had not been displayed.

Did then check on original message (which said from "Geni" <no-reply@geni.com>) -- same "magic" there.

I just received my test results and I am H5a1g1a . Is there a consensus as to where I should add it to my profile?

Private User
4/6/2013 at 10:36 AM

H5a1g1a is your mtDNA though isn't it?

Private User
4/6/2013 at 10:37 AM

What's your Y-DNA result?

Private User
4/6/2013 at 10:52 AM

Eldon, I put my results in my "About." No other place is really appropriate for it.

And yes, H5 is your mtDNA haplogroup. Your Y-DNA will likely be more interesting for you as a male.

4/6/2013 at 12:49 PM

There are groups of DNA projects. Join the appropriate one as a collaborator - that project will then show on your profile page, and membership in the project will let you collaborate with others in the group.

I added the mtDNA results for my male cousin to his mother (our grandmother)'s "about" , her mother, etc. until the "oldest known" and added that profile to the project as a profile.

I'm U4 also @Ashley. Have to go look at the subtype.
