I'm trying to establish the exact nature of WCB's military service. He is often listed as "Captain", but what he was captain of, is unclear. "Captain" of Fort Bryan? Did he hold any military rank, either with a militia or with the Continental Army? Are there any known records of him in the military rolls of the time, or perhaps military pension awarded to his widow? I know that Kentucky was not yet a state, but that frontier outposts served the Revolutionary cause as well.
Any information one might be able to share would be greatly appreciated.
Paper found amongst my family's genealogy documents:
Notes of the Bryan Family - Kentucky Historical Society: "In conclusion it may be interest to note that the descendants of Morgan Bryan are of baronial and Garter, as well as royal ancestry, and as such are eligible to membership in many societies of an hereditary nature. Among them may be mentioned the Baronial Order of Runnemede, Americans of Royal Descent, and the Society of Descendants of Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter."
Perhaps this plays a part in the title of Captain.
