When someone is deceased, their profile can be reported to Geni as "deceased" from Actions --> Report. I believe that Geni hands management of the tree over to the active Geni member who is the closest relative. They take action fairly quickly once the profile is reported.
The question is whether all the profiles are in his family group and private. If they are outside his family group and private, it may be possible for Geni to make them public.
This question has come up before. You can also then report an abandoned tree in the comments when you report the deceased as deceased. You can suggest if there are DECEASED profiles in the tree that you be given management if you know that there are no close family, but I don't know if Geni will do this.
Yes, I agree that it is a good idea to nominate someone to inherit your tree should you be deceased and that idea has been discussed by various groups. The concept is a "will". What people have brought up is that they might want to give part of the tree to one person and another part of the tree to another person. But I think you could designate ONE person and it would be up to them to divvy up the tree according to your wishes.
All good questions.
I have noticed that Geni's algorithm for finding the closest, active Geni member is not always correct or didn't used to be because my cousin did not get management of her mother's profile, instead a distant cousin did, even though when I reported her mother as deceased I explicitly mentioned my cousin (her daughter) by name as being the person that should get management.
Their algorithm may have been improved as I haven't heard of that happening to others recently.
