Oh, I Thougth you meant me! You mean Erica Howton
She is the one who did all this, I'm sure she will know.
I do think one of his wives may be missing (and found it that way last night). The marriages are to:
Stephen had four wives: 1. Ann Bate; 2. Christian Weare; 3. Helen Mason; 4. Mary Beedle.
The children are:
1. Deborah b. 1592 married Rev. John Wing
2. Stephen b. 1594
3. Ann b. 1601 married a Samborn
4. Theodate b. 1588; died 10/20/1649 at Hampton, New Hampshire; married Christopher Hussey
Help appreciated.
Rev. Stephen Bachiler
The Reverend Stephen Bachiler founded the town of Hampton in 1638-9 at the age of about 77 years. He probably died in London in 1656 (not in Hackney in 1660 as is so often reported). Although his origins in England are unknown, he led a long and colorful life. Much has been written about him, a lot of which is untrue or inaccurate. Several short biographies of him can be found on this website through the links below. For the latest up-to-date and authoritative information, read the section on him in "The Great Migration Begins : immigrants to New England, 1620-1633" by Robert Charles Anderson and published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston in 1995. All references that may be found in various places on the Internet to his "father" Philip Bachiler are incorrect and should be ignored or, preferably, corrected. Much research has been done to search for his parentage in England, but to date there has been no success.

From the same web site
Morgan's book of arms was published a few years after Stephen Bachiler's death in London (he was buried on 31 October 1656 at Allhallows Staining.) When Morgan was compiling his book in London, he may well have taken the opportunity to interview the returned nonagenarian minister regarding his adventures in the New World. Bachiler connections with England's rising merchant class would not have been lost on him: the minister's oldest son Nathaniel (c.1590- 1645) had married into that world through his wife Hester Mercer [LeMercier] and her cousins within the large and wealthy Pryaulx family, and Nathaniel's daughter Anna married merchant Daniel du Cornet. Stephen Bachiler's real– if thwarted– role as a colonizer must have piqued Morgan's imagination, even as the Sphere of Gentry project may have found subscribers among those members of England's new "mercantile nobility" who could claim relation to him.
Justin sent me a few notes that may help clarify the good (?) reverend's Geni profile a bit more --
He wrote:
I have FIVE wives: Ann Bate, Christian, Helena, Mary Magdalene, and unknown.
For Unknown:
I have been unable to discover the name of this last wife of Stephen Batchelder, but her existence is known from the 1656 divorce proceedings instituted by his wife Mary. She stated that Stephen had returned to England and taken another wife.
For Helena Mason:
Helena Mason, a widow, married Rev. Stephen Batchelder. She was age 47 in 1631, when she and her husband received a license to travel to Flushing, Holland. She died before 3 May 1647, when Rev. Stephen wrote to Gov. Winthrop of her death.
For Ann Bate:
The name Ann Bate is usually given for the first wife of Rev. Stephen Batchelder. However, there seems to be no contemporary evidence that her name was Ann. She is thought to have been a relative of Rev. John Bate, the vicar at Wherwell, Hampshire who replaced Stephen Batchelder. Rev. John Bate called Stephen Bachiler, Jr. "Cousin." On that basis alone, her maiden name is given as Bate.

Now this note I need to add to timeline of my recently discovered direct ancestor
In 1641 he was at Casco (now Portland), Maine. His stay there must have been brief, but while there he was chosen umpire in cases of difference between George Cleeves and John Winter. Cleves had said that Winter's wife was the drunkenest woman in Plymouth, England, while Winter had appropriated lands belonging to Cleeves. The various suits which resulted were left to the arbitration of three men, with Stephen Bachiler as umpire. The decision was that John Winter should have house and land, paying £60 to Cleeves, while Cleeves should "Christianly acknowledge his failing thereby" against Mrs. Winter, first to the arbitrators and then to her.
About that coat of arms?
"A curious book published in London in 1661 included a supposed coat of arms for Stephen Bachiler, which included a punning reference to the Plough Company (Sylvanus Morgan, The Sphere of Gentry: Deduced from the Principles of Nature, An Historical and Genealogical Work, of Arms and Blazon ..., pp.102-03). This was certainly not a properly granted coat of arms, but something invented by the author for his own literary purposes"
I have recently discovered that Stephen Bachiler is my 10th generation great grandfather! Ironically I was crowned, "Miss Hampton Beach" in 1982...344 years later, and I had no idea my great grandfather founded the town!!
Nantucket has been my summer home for the last 25 years and I just found out last year that Theodate's husband, Christopher Hussey was one of 9 men who purchased the Island in 1654! There is a greave site there called, "The Founders Burial Ground", but the women's gave stone states that Thoedate died in 1685, which I know is not true!
I will be back in Nantucket this summer and I'm wondering if I should mention this error to the Historical Association! Although it would probably result in removing her name altogether from the grave stone, since she died in 1649 and Christopher purchased the Island in 1654.
What does your research prove about Theodate's year of death???
Kind regards,
Deborah

@Deborah Gaslow: I'm descended from Theodate and Christopher Hussey as well, through their son John Hussey who married Rebecca Perkins. John was a Quaker minister who left Hampton, NH to settle in Delaware.
I had no idea that Christopher was one of the purchasers of Nantucket. Fascinating. Thanks for that tidbit.
