I am interested to hear any further details of the history of Dr Francis Cobham of Barbados born 1798. Dr Cobham married Mary Harvie McCrae on Aug 2nd (or Seot 1st) 1820 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland and they had three children, Francis McCrae Cobham b. 9th March 1823, d. 1902 Wodonga, Victoria, Elizabeth Harvie Cobham b. about 1826, d. 1904, Warrnambool, Victoria (she was my Mother’s great grandmother) and Mary Alleyne Cobham b. about 1829, d. 1886, South Yarra, Victoria. All the children were probably born in Barbados leaving with their mother to return to Edinburgh shortly after the death of Dr Francis Cobham during the devestating hurrican of 1831. Francis Cobham junior sailed for Sydney in 1839, while the two girls sailed from Edinburgh on the Lysander with their mother arriving at Port Phillip in late October 1841. I have also found the Alleyne-Cobham connection through Susan Alleyne b. 1763 Barbados d. 1806, daughter of Jan Skeete b. 1735 Barbados and Abel Alleyne b. 1734 St Thomas Barbados. Susan married Richard Cobham and they had a daughter Mary Jane Cobham. To date I have not found any link between Dr Francis Cobham and Richard Cobham/Susan Alleyne, but it seems likely that Francis Cobham was related to the Alleyne family (his 2nd daughter's second name) and family documents indicate that his first daughter Elizabeth, was related to her husband Mark Nicholson, whose mother was an Alleyne.
