Henry Huffman son of Henry Huffman and CFry Huffman. I have letter in my possession where Henry changed his spelling back to Hoffman when he learned via his children HUFFMAN was not a German name used in Germany only in the US and HOFFMAN was the name used in Germany. He was tired of getting all the other related H Huffmans that were kin and neighbors. Sanford served in the war as Huffman but moved to Iowa and settled as a HOFFMAN. Older children kept the Huffman spelling since they had married and already had children. I do not know if she ever changed maiden name from Huffman but her father did change it in mid life.
The later generations, including the current generations in Greene County, have continued to use Huffman. I'm not aware of any Hoffman's remaining in Greene County, PA. Perhaps some that moved west retained the Hoffman spelling. Many families seem to have variations in spelling, whether intentional or by accident. In my family, we have Dinsmore and Densmore, and an older use of Dinsmoor.
When I started this research eon's ago I started with 5 Henry Huffman's to find my direct line it took me some major digging and family findings to get the clues I needed to verify my data. Eva Patterson shared a great story with me when I was there and I shared another with her, we both laughted til we cried walking down Main St. near the Court House.
Huffman/Hoffman's have a couple of obvious traits. She knew one I knew the other one and we could pick out Huffman's with out even speaking to them. Was fun. Dad told me of the one I knew, he learned it when he was courting Mom. Another story to tell.
