Anyone have knowledge about the records side of My Heritage? I have a full membership at Ancestry and wonder if obtaining a full membership at My Heritage will just be a duplication of the same records. Or so they have some "secret" source? I sort of doubt it. But I thought it was worth the ask...

I had a similar question Beth Marie Beeman. I don't maintain my tree on Ancestry but I find their records and sources to be very good and especially now that I have access to their UK records as well. A huge amount of work went into their records and for now I don't see a compelling reason to switch.

But there could be things on My Heritage that are not on Ancestry. I did hear that they had full text indexed newspapers which I assume you cannot find using Google on the Internet. That's a good source that I haven't used enough because it irks me to pay a subscription to the archives of every little newspaper.

Hi Hatte. I have a membership on My Heritage but it does not include the record search - they charge extra for that - and, like you, I was reluctant to pay for it. I have a full membership on Ancestry that has been good for records and such, and I have used Fold3. The only reason I have a membership on My Heritage is that I found some other folks that have a cross over on to my tree and it has been nice to connect with them. I'm hoping that one of the benefits of being a Pro member here on Geni is that we will get something extra on My Heritage. But I might be over hoping :)

P.s. how does one tag someone in a post. I've tried putting the @ symbol before a name and it doesn't seem to work?

Beth Marie Beeman

two ways - easiest is just put your mouse over the name link in discussions that you want to tag and choose Copy Link Location.

Other way is to "follow" the person but when you follow a lot of people like I do that doesn't always work. That's when you can use @ and start typing the name and if the name is now very similar to many others, you will get a short list of links and can chose the right one. So for ancestors whose link I want to drop into a discussion, that's how I do it.

You can also have two windows open and I believe just copy the link into the discussion from a second window where you have the profile open but that's tedious.

Finally if you put [[ ]] around the identifying number, you'll tag the person and if there are diacritics or special characters, they will show up correctly.

"I'm hoping that one of the benefits of being a Pro member here on Geni is that we will get something extra on My Heritage ..."

I do believe that may well become the case, but we need to give them time to work that through.

I would need to do more comparisons for record data. The newspapers are most interesting to me for MyHeritage and I think they also have WorldVitalData images, which would be new to me (I've only seen transcriptions so far).

MyHeritage might also have a richer data set for European records. Your Italian side Beth!
