Here is the profile link Sir James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Annandale
This line is VERY messed up. I started following it because my line led to an Unknown Johnstone
Gilbert Johnstone, Sr. married to an Elizabeth Belchier. Turns out this is a Duplicate of another in the line.
Anyway... looking for someone who understands the history of this part of the world. I don't want to go mucking about in something I don't know much about. What I do know is this needs help :)
I'm happy to do what I can. Thoughts?
Can you take a look at Peter Johnstone Johnson under resolve data conflicts? It looks like there might have been a bad merge at some point - and the data for the real Peter should be selected, hopefully with some sourcing references in the profile.
Thanks Erica. I just sent her a note about the data conflicts. I'm also searching to see if Peter is really his son. I haven't found any supporting documents yet, but it might be easier now that we have a first name for his father. Also, Gilbert and wife are now duplicates of other entries in the tree. Now the fun begins :)
My 5th cousin Capt. John Johnstone is driving me slightly mad.
Scots Peerage 1904 Vol. 1 page 262 has him with daughters only.

Burke's has him marrying a Polish Graf's daughter and dying in 1714.

But Prominent Virginia Families swears he married a Huguenot lady and had many sons (getting themselves in political trouble).
They can't all be true?
I am however not seeng a son Peter of Gilbert Johnstone of the Annandale Johnstones.
"Gilbert Johnston fought at the Battle of Cullonden. He married Caroline Johnston and settled in Bladen, NC. Their children were: Gilbert, Henry, Caroline, Gabriel, Robert, William, Isabel and John."

LOL. Welcome to my nightmare. I started out trying to confirm the lineage through the "Unkown Johnston" and started seeing all the confusing and conflicting research. I haven't yet seen a son Peter of Gilbert Johnstone either. I think, in the end, we will find that Peter is connected in error. My guess is that this occurred on Ancestry and got perpetuated here. Sharon sent me a note and says she will try and do some further digging into her info. I'll keep looking also.
I'm thinking we have two generations of Gilbert Johnstone's being confabulated somewhere and neither will be your problem, because Peter Johnstone is another family off the Ulster plantation perhaps, landing in the port of Baltimore and making his way to Pennsylvania in a classic Scotch-Irish migration route.
Can I ask which child of Peter you are tracking? It helps to come at it bottom up as well as top down.
Andrew Lynn, Jr married to Mary A. Johnson. I'm related through the Andrew Lynn or Linn tree. I can find no record of Mary's father Peter's lineage except that he himeself was born in Wales in 1705. I don't believe anyone has ever connected him to James Johnstone, except here on Geni. I have a couple of books on the Corbly-Lynn family in my possession and find lots of brief notations about Andrew Lynn, Jr and his marriage. Mary A. Johnson came from Town Creek MD. She died in Crabtree Bottom which is now called Brownsville, PA. I would suggest that soon we should be able to disconnect Peter from James Johnstone - pending a weigh in from Sharon Kathryn Lynn Arnold.
I did look over the Mary A Johnson profile before and thought it solid. Peter Johnson from Wales? Really? I'm betting that's a port - where he sailed from - but that he may not have been actually Welsh. Johnson seems more often derived from Scots Johnston.
You might gather I have more than one brick wall Johnson / Johnston in my tree.:):)
Of course as soon as I hit the Andrew link I got a match for you to look at:)

I coordinate a group of over 100 Johnston/es who are connected by our Y-DNA test results and documentation. In 2017 we identified the haplogroup of our ancient Clan Johnstoun Chiefs: I-M223. Within this haplogroup we have been able to document the line of William Johnstoun of Gretna and Newbie and his son John Johnstoun of Newbie. I welcome any and all inquiries. We encourage you to have a male Johnston in your line test his Y-DNA with FTDNA which is the only Y-DNA testing service that we can use the results from. It's a uniformity of test results thing.
