I have a question though. I see that every town in Friesland has an ijsbaan. BUT when I look at pictures, it is a big open green field with sheep grazing on it!! How is it an Ijsbaan when there's grass?? Do they flood it with water in the winter to turn it into an ijsbaan?!?

Braam, if it's your first visit to Friesland, you will understand, in winter, where the name comes from. It really comes from "Freeze Land" :-)
From a historical perspective, I simply remain amazed how people could thrive in such a cold and barren land. Then again, from the historical perspective, I suspect that the Spanish powers over the Low Countries just felt that 'Freeze Land' was a plain STOP :-)

George, I have managed to connect with a few of my Schoeman cousins. I also recently undertook a DNA test with FTDNA (still waiting for them to receive the samples in the USA) to see if I can trace ancestors further back than the progenitor Heinrich Schumacher who came to South Africa. My main focus for now is the Schaap family as it is the family that I know best and had the most involvement with growing up. I almost consider myself more a Schaap than a Schoeman.

I must have inherited the Schaap genes, because I flourish in cold weather. The colder the better. It is ironic that my Frisian great grandfather decided to settle in one of the hottest towns in South Africa (to my discomfort!) where we regularly experience days above 40degrees celsius. Then again, I don’t think I have experienced that type of extreme cold, so for all I know I might not even like it. Just thought it would be easier going in November/December as I’m going on a choral tour to the Netherlands and thought I could kill two birds with one stone.

Fred, I know allefriezen quite well and have managed to get a lot of information there. There is, however, a point where it stops and I cannot find any living relatives. There are a few potentials that I discovered on Facebook (who’d have thought to use Facebook as a genealogy source!) but I am not 100% sure that they are the people I’m looking for and I’m afraid that they might not take too kindly to me contacting them on their Facebook profiles. I tried contacting one Schaap relative in August who I am fairly sure is related to me and I have yet to hear anything back from her. Que sera…

Braam, I am a Bergman but I am raised in the family of my mother Vlietman. I started on Faceboek a page Vlietman genealogy and all over the world I found Vlietman descendants who are all family to each other and I only had to ask their mothers and grandmothers names to connect them with the Vlietman tree. I invited them to Geni with their Facebook emailaddress that is for everyone easy to compose. You see on their facebookpage in the address their facebookname and with that you start, followed by @facebook.com et voila you can invite the person to the profile you make for them!

HI, need help or advice. I have been building our Family tree here in the Philippines and I have found out that our ancestors are from Netherlands actually my old relatives said that our ancestors where 3 brothers, German speaking. I have learned that Eisma originated in Netherlands

I found this on the Eisma Axmear Genealogy paper

Gilles Fekkes Eisma, born around 1658, was commander at sea and
living in Haarlem. His brother, Dirk, born 1653 in Bolsward, is
presumably the city pharmacist in Haarlem; and you can find him on a
painting from 1692 from the Collegium Medico-Pharmaceuticum from
which he was a member. It is unknown if Gillis and Dirk were
married and left children behind.

I would like help to trace the family of my fathers mother, Gertrud Kox born Buderich 5/9/1911 died circa April 1953. She was the wife of Petrus Bastianus van Waard born August 14, 1909, died September 16, 1945 Haarlem, Netherlands. Married on 30/ Dec 1931

I live in New Zealand so finding and confirming information is difficult I have searched many databases but have not been able find and birth or death record

Jacques Robert van Waard Büderich is in Germany but the problem is that there are 3 places in Germany with this name, one Büderich part of Wesel, one Büderich a part of Meerbusch, and one part of Werl.

And because she was born in 1911 it is possible that this record is not available yet

We have not been able to determine Getrude Kox' home town and at this point in time can onlyoffer an educated guess that it may be "Büderich a part of Meerbusch" if only because of the modern day concentration of the Kox surname to the Netherlands border nearer to there. We are still looking at this end for any info that may aid our search. My paternal grandmothers' part of our family tree is the only part left to develop and we would dearly love to complete it

I am the grandson of one of Fred van Waard's fathers brothers i.e. I am Fred van Waards cousin once removed. I thank you for the information. Ialready have it as Fed van Waards profile is my family tree.
What I don't have for Getrude Kox is the specific info such as exact date of death, place of burial, a defined place of birth etc etc.
I have been a bit bewildered in trying to determine where to look. I ave tried many online databases etc looking for any info I can but I am a bit lost at the moment. Just trying to find out where to look in the German online sites has given me a few sleepless nights here in New Zealand.

HI jack! Did you contact Fred van Waard allready? It is not yet possible to see the marriage document, because that isn't yet 75 years old. But Fred as a direct familymember and also you are allowed to see it, but then it must be requested to the municipality where the civil register is and that is the municipality where she married. In that document are mentioned both parents of the bride and the groom.
