Some people, including a curator, are claiming that duplicates of private profiles (of deceased people) are not supposed to be added to the world tree.
In case of the curator he was claiming that Geni privacy rules won't allow it. In the other case it was claimed that it concerned profiles belonging to 'her' tree (all were long deceased).
This doesn't make sense to me, at all. I don't believe that Geni's privacy are interpreted correctly here. Also, I don't think that the concept of one world tree would make much sense if every user can have private profiles of up to 6 degrees without allowing any public duplicates.
You are correct that the privacy "rules" on Geni, which in fact are simply display rules, have nothing to do with it. And you are right that there is no "my" and "your" tree, but only "our" tree.
But since the goal is to have just one profile per person, the best practice is to try to gain access by family group membership, or to convince the manager to make the profiles pubic (in which case a collaboration request will permit merging and editing them). In some cases, you can even request management to get access. If those fail, and the person insists on having a stand-alone tree (or does not respond at all), then duplication may be the only option. Perhaps a small amount of duplication, enough to cause some matches and merger requests, would be the best first step, as this might lead the manager to open them up.
I would say that if the tree is connected, it may be best not to duplicate all of it, and to allow the person to remain private. Eventually, you might get access.
Maybe the business-profits are much higher when geni allows a lot of paying members to create their own 'niche' in the forest of trees? And that is a bigger threat for the idea of a simple and unique barrier-less connexxion-line between ALL global visitors then any discussion about private or public between two distant users who are forced to communicate in non-native languages.
