I have only been able to go back as far as 1834 to the birth of my great great grandfather Albert Coleman (negro) who was married to Julia Coleman (negro) who was born in 1839. most of my family seem to have connections to halfax county, halifax virginia. I can't find anything about Albert past 1834. I don't know where to go from here. No one in my family knows much about the patriarchal side of the family. I want to have a first Coleman family reunion but I would like to get as much info as I could about the Coleman's. Any suggestions from those who are not newbies like me on how to go further. I don't know where to even begin looking. I have no info on Julia's parents or Albert's parents. Albert was a farm laborer according to the 1880 Census (or was that 1860?).
I wish I could help Private User. I went on Ancestry because occasionally I can find weird bits of information places you might not think to look for them. I also looked at Google books and did a Google search. This will take someone more familiar with that era and that region than I am.
There is a Coleman slave owner in Halifax. I think if I were you I would look at all non-white Coleman births and marriages in Halifax and look for names that are similar to the names that Albert and Julia gave their children.
Erica Howton Kenneth Kwame Welsh, (C) Private User Private User -- do any of you have suggestions as to sources and methods to do this research?
I'm guessing that Halifax was a small place and that some of the Colemans who are black from Halifax are your relatives. Maybe not all. I don't know the customs but I suspect non-related slaves might have taken the same surname. But I would gather those names and then start looking for them in later censuses and in family trees. I saw Coleman Halifax, VA in a list on a black heritage site.

While it may not help you find people you're looking for, there might be some references / sources on the profiles attached to those projects which may give you some ideas for places to look ... and the collaborators on those projects may also have some thoughts.
