I recently happend to stumble into this treasure while researching Pehr af Bjerkén, Sr., Per af Bjerkén, Jr., et al. The portrait collection is just amazing! Well worth a visit for every connoisseur of traditional silhouettes, engravings, album amicorum, etc.

The Portrait Collection at the Diocesan and County Library of Skara

The Diocesan and County Library in Skara has a collection of portraits of more than 5000 items. It contains mainly of engravings, but also miniature paintings and drawings. This kind of collections was relatively common in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe. Most of these collections are now dispersed. However, the collection in Skara has been almost untouched since the middle of the 19th century.

All items of the collection have now been digitized and tagged with new, extended search criteria, and can easily be found through the library’s online catalogue. The digitization has made the portraits easy to search and retrieve for scholars and others interested in portraits and art. The original material can be kept in protected stacks, safe from handling and ware.

Stifts- och landsbiblioteket i Skara förfogar över en porträttsamling med drygt femtusen bilder. Främst rör det sig om gravyrer, men också om miniatyrmålningar och teckningar. Att sammanställa samlingar av det här slaget var relativt vanligt i Europa under 1600- och 1700-talen. Många är dock skingrade sedan länge.

Alla objekt i samlingen är idag digitaliserade genom ett projekt, och har försetts med nya, utförliga sökkriterier och kan lätt återfinnas i bibliotekets katalog. Digitaliseringen har gjort samlingen lättillgänglig för forskare och allmänhet, samtidigt som de gamla mapparna kan ligga i tryggt förvar i vårt arkiv — utan att slitas.
