Recently when I click to find a pathway of a relationship I am now getting something that says " x is your 20th great grandmothers 10th great grandfather". It used to say that the person x was my something or other great grandfather. What has changed? Are there multiple pathways to far back individuals?
I got no answers on this. I will explain it better. Here is an example. If I click on Edward the I the Elder, King of the Anglo Saxons I get "he is my twentieth great grandfathers wife's eight great grandfather". However when I look at my tree it says he is my 30th great grandfather. This never happened before where I had two different relationships with somebody. He shows up as my ancestor but according to the click to find the relationship he is more of an in law. But isn't one of my great grandfather's wife's great grandfather also just my gg? (Not necessarily). If anyone could shed light on this I would appreciate it.
Hi Vicki, yes there are multiple pathways. Sometimes when things change on the tree, the pathway changes, even though your relationship to the person may not have been changed as a result.
When you look at how you are related to someone from centuries ago, like Edward the Elder, there are many possible paths from him to you. Geni has a method that calculates the relationship, that may or may not match the relationship that you are aware of. And may not seem as direct as the relationship you have in your records.
Also, sometimes what you have in your records relies upon a connection that ends up being severed, because it is not documented or has been disproven. That's always disappointing, but on the other hand, I find new connections I was unaware of, so I figure it all evens out.
I am sure others can add more.
Its still really doing it. I find it frustrating. I think GENI should always first default to the most primary relationship which is great grandmother, grandfather first. Then there should be button to click on that says "other relationship paths" and you could then see the others displayed to look at.
Vicki further to Hatte's points; relationship pathways through their "calculation engines" are always dynamic and based on constant activities in the "historic" tree. Geni has jobs on the servers that do not always refresh automatically but will given a couple of days. In addition the way you approach the distant ancestor can give you different results. If you search discussions you'll see multiple discussions on the issue. Personally I enjoy the dynamism - it opens up new family strands to explore.
