That's what I wondered, too. FindAGrave currently has 6 John W. Jacksons with memorials in 6 different locales, all born the same year.

The originally-referenced John W. married a woman from Ohio, which also leads me to think he was not a Confederate soldier (they were classified in the 1880 census as mulato).

I try to dig more on it when I have bit time ok. You may have to look in Slave schedules and I not really great with them. Been having same issue with my Native American kin not much out there on them just family stories.

He served in the 5th US Colored Infantry. His gravestone says so and this is supported by service records on Fold3 and his application for a military gravestone.

I like to see if I can add this person to the Union project he served in civil war and I tried to contact profile managers the system won’t let me request to have him added.
