Hi Jadra, I was thinking of taking my own photo's when I go out next, as it's not that far from here, but I also will be talking to the guys at the Kooragang Wetlands Rehab project and Newcastle Uni and Library etc, wrt maps and photo's.
Went out to the island the other weekend - was the first time my children had been there, though I point it out every time we go past and they now tell ME as we drive by! My 4th GG'parents were pioneers of the island (1858), though my 2G-grandmother was the last in my direct line to be born there as everyone sold out or was cleared out for the industrial redevelopment by BHP.
I didn't want to breach any copyrights and, as a courtesy thought I would ask for the use of specific maps and photo's after looking through - there are alot! There are some particularly nice B&W photo's (silver negs, I think) that come up on a Google search of "Moscheto Island" and you can see the lovely vestigal rainforest trees towering over the grassy paddocks, the river, and the old farmhouses. Old and misty, they're quite evocative.
Also, the Aust Museum in Sydney has some gorgeous illustrations by the Scotts of various flora fauna of Ash Island which I think would be wonderful. I have dealt with Rose Docker (their archivist - she's lovely) before, as my uncle is descended from Adam Becker, a taxidermist who worked there in the 1850's and 1860's and she was able to send me 2 original letters in his hand, which was great for my cousins. Funnily enough (I found out tonight), Adam was brought out by Harriet Scott's son-in-law Wilhelm Kirschner who was the Consul for Hamburg, Prussian and Austria in Colonial NSW - small world.
