Several researchers have identified Mordechai Mendel Kahan as a son of Daniel Kahana ben Yosef Kahana (1747-1825). Has anyone identified a source to document this connection? Where is Mordechai Mendel buried? Are there matzevot or death records that identify children other than his daughter Rivka/Regina NOJAVITS/NEOVITS?
Hi Vivian
hope all is well
there is a matzeva for esther grunfeld identifying her as the daughter of mordechai hacohen
it does seem that the dates would indicate that mordechai father of rivka
was the son of daniel who was the son of mordechai the brother of the ktzos hachoshen
i have found evidence of mordechai kahan's sons from khust from the khist yizchor book page 87
listing the "kahan family " as r' mordechai, yehuda, shammai, daniel
nothing about daughters?!?
wishing you a great pesach
dan
According to the chapter on Huszt in the Book of Maramures, Esther Kahan, wife of Rabbi Yehuda Grunfeld was the daughter of " the wealthy Hassid Rabbi Mordechai Kahana, one of the important householders of Chust... the grandson of Rabbi Mordechai HaKohen, the brother of the author of Ketzot Hachoshen and the author of Kuntrus Hasefekot." If this is correct, seems unlikely that Daniel ben Mordechai, who died in Huszt 28 Nov 1886 was his son. If not, which Daniel buried in Chust is the grandfather of Rivka Kahan Neovits, Eszter Kahan Grunfeld, Yehuda Kahan (d. 31 Mar 1895), and Shmai Kahan (d. 12 Mar 1909)? Daniel ben Yosef Heller Kahana, brother of Kuntres HaSfeikos and R. Mordechai of Ungvar, seems to be a more likely prospect.
Thanks vivian
it is of course slightly confusing
repeating names and intermingling of the generations
do you know that rivka , esther, shamai, and yehuda were siblings?
also is it true that mordechai from chust liived1815- 1861(ben daniel)
mordechai from ungvar lived 1780-1870 (ben yosef)?
if so is it concievable that either mordechai could have had a son daniel living until 1886?
thank you very much you are truly amazing
hope the west coast is warmer than here

thanks vivian for all your help i of course do agree about the rigidity of geni in regards to changing relationships
apropos to that it seems that my branch became a bit messed up
rivka neovits's father mordechai is listed as having a father also mordechai
any advice on how to readjust and repair?

Mordechai ben Yosef HELLER-KAHAN, brother of Ketzot haChosen is obviously NOT the father of Mordechai Mendel/Moricz KAHAN, father of Rifke KAHAN NOJAVITS (1845-1906). His father may have been Daniel ben Mordechai KAHANA who died in Huszt 28 Nov 1886. Geni is full of errors that I typically choose to ignore. Much too much sloppy research.
