Hi Alex,
I was told that here in Germany we have no online archives.
They tried to build a new metro some years ago and because of the static the archive in Cologne clashed down. I haven't heard if they are working again.
And-by the way- this is the first time I met somebody who had the same birthday than my daughter Jessica Lifshitz.
Regards
Ingrid Meissner
yes, it would be very helpful to know some more about GERMAN online archives, for so many people in the NETHERLANDS are stuck with their German-neighbourn-ancestry and I think Geni lacks enough really German-educated Genealogists to help us out. So maybe we should cry somewhat louder about our needs, don't you think, Alexander?
That was also the very reason to start this German Portal, but till now GENI has not yet reached the German lanuguage enough, or am I wrong? hope so, for a lot of the knowledge about my grandparents grandmothers is to be found further east then KOLN~Cologne.
Herzliche Grüße aus Holland, Janetchen mit den roten Haaren - auch aus Deutschland, denke ich....

We have them also listed for Estonian geni people in the project: http://www.geni.com/projects/Kasulikke-allikaid-ja-muid-materjale/1... But the descriptions there are mostly in Estonian.
I can send for the project some more links about Germany (mostly related with the wars and Baltic German people).
Please sort them yourself, as I can not read German myself directly, thou my interpretations might be wrong

I am looking specifically for Joseph Schiefer, born c.1870, a married Margareta Hilz c.1900 (their daughter Gertrud was born 1906 in Cologne, Germany).
One family legend has it that Joseph lost a leg fighting at Verdun in WW1 which would mean he was still alive in 1916, but as with family lore i have no idea the truthfulness of this.
I also have Gertrud's wedding certificate from 1931, Joseph was not present at the wedding (no signature) but there is no statement that he was deceased at the time, so it is highly probable he was still alive.
A small update on my search for relatives in Cologne.
Joseph Schiefer fought in the war of 1870, not WW1 so i've moved his estimated DOB back to c1850.
His wife's name was actually Margareta WILZ not Hilz.
As I said the wedding certificate of their daughter Gertrud is good evidence that both Joseph and Margareta were still alive in 1931.
