Probably Canadians in the Project will have noticed that the War of 1812 has become BIG here see www.celebrate1812.ca with several major national events. For me the most important in the annual re-enactment of Battle of Cryslers Farm at Upper Canada Village www.cryslersfarm.com as this was the battle in which my ancestor Dxiie Ellis had a major role.
anyway Upper Canada village is also quite a significant tourist centre. I am prpoposing to try and bring together as many descendants of those who fought in the battle for the main re-enactment event next year. I note that Smyth Carter who was instrumental in creating the Cryslers Farm memorial wnated "on the anniversary of the battle some kind of gathering...bring together ...the descendants of those worthy heroes". if this vision is not fulfilled in 2013 then when? I have visions of recreating the breakfsst scene before the battle when John Sewell was cooking meat on his sword, perhaps in a nearby restaurant in the evening rather than at breakfast!
I think that the worthy heroes should certainly included those who fought on all sides of the war and so I encourage the members of the Geni project to drop me a line if they are interested or post other ideas of ways to celebrate the Bicentennial.

I'm tied up at the moment just finishing off the Titanic and then the Queens Honours for the DIamond Jubilee but I intend to start a project relating to 1812 as I have ancestors that were involved with this and I'm ashamed to say I am incredibly ignorant about it. I now have a book so hope to gen up about it. If a project was started I would certainly join in.
Thanks so much for your post, simon ellis. I'm always very impressed by how much more Canadians care about the War of 1812 than Americans. And I still think Laura Secord is one of the coolest women ever! :)
I'm still trying to work out if all the 'Secords' that occur as second names in my family tree are simply tributes to Laura Secord or if there is some sort of familial link. Even my uncle's second name is Secord and that is rather recent to be a tribute to Laura although I guess the original tribute could have been 'lost' and it could be a tribute to one of the other 'Secords' in the family. (is that clear as mud?)
Dear Terry
Good luck with the Secords. I guess I am most closely acquanited with Laura Secord the chocolate makers! I have been interrested in Lt FiztGibbon to whom Laura 'reported' as I am trying to amass as much detail as possible concerning junior officers of the 49th (like my ancestors Herc & Dixie). I am a bit surprised that FitzG gets the attention when she seems to have had a brother who was Sgt in the 49th - perhaps as FitzG had higher rank. Also whereas we have paintings of some 6-8 junior officers of the 49th of the period 1806-15 we have no contemporary ones of Lt Fitzgibbon who was surely a prime candidate. There were also two successful painters in the 49th Lt Kittermaster and Capt Dennis.

Partial list of Americans serving in War of 1812 AND their regiments.
Dear All
This week have just confirmed post on www.celebrate1812.ca that at the Bicentennial Re-enactment of Battle of Cryslers Farm, Upper Canada Village July 13-14 2013 there will be a photo for all descendants of anyone living in the area 1813 or of people who were in the regiments taking part in the battle.
I hope as posted last year that we can get many descendants of people who were on the US side. Upper Canada Village is already a tourist attraction and there are lots of heritage events in the district this summer including the 'Tall Ships' appearing at various ports along the St Lawrence, Jane Austen Regency balls etc.. See the web site for more details
