I cannot correct this incorrect spelling, but there is definitely no place in England spelt Worchester and the West Midlands was not so called until recent times and still does not include Worcestershire!

Hello Ann ... I took a look at Thoams Farley's profile and corrected it for you.....take a look and see that it is right.

Since the "About Me" section says he was born in Liverpool, I changed his birthplace to that.

(Sorry Rhonda... Didn't mean to step on your toes, there.)

Yes I read that afterwards ... you are correct David .

Thanks so much Rhonda. What would I do without you dear cousin? Ann x

Geoffrey, I question the accuracy of Liverpool as being the place of birth. He may have set sail from Liverpool but his father ended his life in Worcestershire and I bet my bottom dollar his son was born in Worcestershire! That was the area for the Farleys ... They were not Liverpudlians. Sorry, but I do not believe what you put. Ann

Thomas Farley's grandfather was my tenth great grandfather. He was Reginald born in Towthorpe Yorkshire England. He died in WORCESTERSHIRE. His son Roger was born and died in Worcestershire. His son Thomas (I feel certain and have read) was born in WORCESTERSHIRE. ... my notes....
Roger's son Sir Thomas Farley, took the hand of a lady known only as Jane in marriage. That same year both Thomas and Jane lost each of their parents. . Soon afterward, feeling there was nothing in England worth staying for, the young couple forsook everything they had in the land of their birth in hope of a newer and better life across a 5,000 mile blanket of ocean. Sir Thomas Farley, his wife, and one servant (Nicholas Shotter) were carried to America by the ship named Anne
I really feel Liverpool should be removed and substituted with Worcestershire.

I think you are correct Ann , there is only this one mention of Thomas being born in Liverpool , all other research I can find says Worcestershire.

Is there debate also about his wife Jane ? Some researchers seem to believe she was not the legitimate daugher of Sir Richard the 1st Baronet
of Sefton Molyneux and Lady Frances Gerard of Sudbury but that there was a young woman born out of wedlock in Lancashire. She was christened on Sept 30, 1607 at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. Her name was listed as Jane Molyneux and her parents were Margrette Hope and Sir John Molyneux. They speculate she was later sent to live in Worcester with relatives in order to avert any embarrassment to the Molyneux family in residence at Sefton. This,of course, is only supposition at this point. Just wondered if you had heard of this?

Oooo what fun. I have copied your message Rhonda and will enjoy researching what you have found. I have her in my tree on my pc as Jane Sefton, Lady Molenyneux.

Funny enough, I do have a Richard Sefton Molenyneaux in my tree and I have that he had a lover, called Margaretta Hope! I have a child from that liaison called JANE SEFTON! and she married Thos Farley in 1622. Unfortunately, I omitted to enter my source, so I need to varify this. Interesting though! Your story seems to hold water! Ann

Rhonda, your name is interesting to me as we have an area in South Wales called The Rhondda Valley. I wonder who chose your name and if they had Welsh roots? Ann

Yes my father made me aware ( when I was a child ) that my name was on a map of Wales ...lol...though I am named after my father Ronald and my mother decided it sounded better as Rhonda-Lee . My father always told me we are descended from Welsh origins but the more research I do , I am not so sure of that. I know the Bowen surname could have originated from Wales , as there are many Bowens there , and the family used to think we were descended from Griffith Bowen (Wales) but alas so far, I cannot locate any concrete sources. I see some researchers of the Bowens , have decided they think we descended from William Bonney
b1635 England . Even though all his children have the surname Bonney and then there is William Bowen I my 6th GGF, b circa 1670
Sudbury, Suffolk , added on as one of William Bonney's children. IAgain I have not been abel to verify if this correct, I don't think he would have changed his name to Bowen from Bonney, when he came to New England. So right now I am still trying to find the right connection, as are several others. This is one piece of the puzzle I would dearly like to know !

Rhonda, I am related to the princes and kings of ancient Wales and you are related to me, so you must surely be related to the Welsh dear cousin.

Yes, Bowen is a very common name in Wales and we had very dear friends by that name, now passed on unfortunately. The wife was born in our cottage at the time and only lived five houses away! The husband, Elfed Bowen was the last anthracite miner to be pulled out of a flooded mine close to where we live in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Ann

3/16/2012 at 10:20 AM

Ann , thank-you for sharing all that info , it was an interesting read to be sure , I have to admit I had not spent much time researching Thomas Farley , I know you are connected closely with that family. Research is always so fascinating , no matter who it is .

Wales would be a place I would love to visit and hopefullly, I can convince my hisband how much more exciting it would be to travel there and Europe , rather than always going somewhere warm to vacation. Since we live on a beautiful lake here in Ontario Canada , he only likes to travel in the winter. He still enjoys water skiing and boating , but when I mentioned that perhaps we could find out more about our families history if we took a trip abroad , he seemed to think that may not be a bad idea ...;)... so here's hoping !!

Dear Rhonda,
If you manage to steer your man to the UK, then make a note of the places NOW, so that you are not too busy to concentrate on that. Let me know the places, and I will advise as some places are not so nice anymore, but most are beautiful still. Rhonda might I suggest that you put Sir Anthony Hungerford or even Jane Hungerford in your search here and then follow backward the wives and their parentage. Most are daughters of Lords of the Relm and as they kept marrying noble people to retain or increase their wealth and lands, you will soon find yourself getting back to royalty.

Try putting in Edward II or Edward III both Kings of England. Edw II born 1284 Caernarvon Castle North Wales, Edw III born 1312 born Windsor Castle, Berkshire England. For me, they are my 18th and 19th great grandfathers. Their descendent King Edward IV born 1442 Rouen France, died Westminster Palace, London England His Dad was Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, read this .. Richard was involved in various battles - one at Ludford, near Ludlow, but was killed in battle at Wakefield.
His son Edward then became leader of the Yorkists; he won a decisive victory at Mortimer's Cross and marched to London to successfully claim the throne.
Now you have a few names to search in the box here!
My dear friend went to Ontario to live many many years ago and she returned to England where my husband was Best Man at her wedding with a lovely Canadian man. Diane and I worked together in the 1960s ... long before your time! hee hee, Ann

Hello. I just happened to see this conversation. I too am related to Sir Thomas Farley. He was my ninth great grandfather. I guess I'm related to Edward II? I'm not sure how to get the geneology going down the generations. I'll try. It would be fun to take a trip and research cool places my ancestors were!

My great grandfather was named Henry Farley. My grandmother spent years researching the Farley line and left me a box full of information. This is before computers. She traveled to Archers Hope and to England. She wanted me to name my son Thomas Farley to carry on the family tradition. I am pleased to find this website and enjoyed reading through all the information.

1/17/2015 at 8:38 PM

Hello I am pretty positive my husband is a direct descendant of Thomas and Lady Jane. Our son Bradley, jr is the last Farley on our branch of the Farley tree. My husbands great grandfather came to PA in the 1920's from Harlan Ky, his name was William born 1898, his father was John his father Henry and his father was Henry C. I would very much like to contact you Julia Decker,

Thomas and Jane are the 10x great grandparents of my husband. The research I have found also confirms that Jane Farley is a descendant of the Molyneux family. I was then able to trace that family back to a William de Molins from France in 1066 who fought against England with William the Conqueror. As a reward he was given 3 manors in England including Sefton. This is the link I found it in https://archive.org/stream/historygenealog00unkngoog/historygenealo...
It is hard to read so you have to take your time. Start reading where it says: LINEAGE OF THE ENGLISH BRANCH, MOLYNEUX
I wasn't able to use the link you posted so I'm hoping you can use this one. If you can't try typing in "History, genealogical and biographical of the Molyneux families" My husband is on ancestry.com We don't have the full membership but he did the DNA and is linked to about 9 other people through DNA that all have this same family on their tree. I am not sure how Reginald Farley or Barbara Farley is related since I can not seem to find anything on my grandfather Donald M. Farley Jr. (1936-2002) or my great grandfather Donald M. Farley Sr. (1912-1986). So if any has information on those two names that would be awesome. For Reginald and Barbara since I am just curious at this point are there two different Barbara's because I have (1526/1541/1544-1550/1603/1606/1618) and the Marriage dates are (1555/1570/1591) for Reginald (1530-1622)

@ Thomas Farley - WORCESTER, WORCESTSHIRE, ENGLAND NOT... DEFINITELY NOT WORCHESTER WEST MIDLAND

While this is an old discussion, which I read with great interest (Thanks to all who participated and contributed information!), I wanted to address something that was addressed as an aside, i.e., the parentage of Jane Molyneaux. wife of Thomas Farley. I'd like to contribute the following to that conversation for your collective and individual consideration and enjoyment.

LADY JANE SEFTON’S MOTHER IS NOT FRANCES GERRARD

You just touched upon one of my favorite subjects - Lady Jane.

A couple of us ladies here have been researching this woman and I can tell you that she was definitely NOT a legitimate daughter of Sir Richard the 1st Baronet of Sefton Molyneux and Lady Frances Gerard of Sudbury. I know what all of the sources say, but she's just not listed in the household records or papers of either one of her parents or grandparents. There is a great deal of mystery surrounding the reason why she styled herself a Lady. Quite a few people surmise the reason that was called Lady may be just out of respect, but I don't think so, or it would have been used for more ladies than just her. We also have to look at the problem of locality. How would a young girl from Liverpool meet and marry a man from Worcester ? She had to have been relatively young when they married because she has a scad of children after coming to Virginia. My illustrious sister in arms, Dot Duncan, has deserted me for a few weeks to go overseas, but we have poured over this problem for quite a while and the only person we can come up with that fits this bill is a young woman born out of wedlock in Lancashire. She was christened on Sept 30, 1607 at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. Her name was listed as Jane Molyneux and her parents were Margrette Hope and Sir John Molyneux. We figure she was later sent to live in Worcester with relatives in order to avert any embarrassment to the Molyneux family in residence at Sefton. This, of course, is only supposition on our part at this point. Since both Dot and I are bordering on the legally insane, you can take it for what it's worth. But, I DO still have Jane attached to Sir Richard and Lady Frances Gerard Molyneux in my database, just for now. We do intend to get back to Worcestershire soon to find out what we can about both Thomas and Jane Molyneux Farley. I won't even touch upon the controversy surrounding Thomas and his ancestry at this point since it tends to throw people into a frenzy.

But we are working on it.[1]
Information for Thomas Farley
Born about the year of 1600 probably the son of Roger Farley, married lady Jane Sefton, of the line of the Earl of Sefton about 1622. [2]
They sailed on the ship "Ann" and were living at Archer's Hope, James City County, Virginia, 16 February 1623. [3]
Their first child Ann, was born on the way over and is said to have been named for the ship.
Tomas Farley was a "member of the House of Burgesses for the plantations between Harrop and Archer's Hope and Martin's Hundred at the session of March 1629-30 and for Archer's Hope February 1631-32." [4]

Notes
Note N439 Croxteth Hall is the former country estate and ancestral home of the Molyneux family, the Earls of Sefton.[1] After the death of the 7th and last Earl in 1972 the estate passed to Liverpool City Council, which now manages the remainder of the estate, following the sale of approximately half of the grounds. The remaining grounds, Croxteth Park, were at one time a hunting chase of the Molyneux family and are now open to the public.

In short, the family descends through Lady Jane Sefton - daughter of the Earl of Sefton whose family links back through the Plantegenets. Lady Jane arrived in the New World in 1623 at Archer's Hope (near Jamestown) aboard the ship, 'the Anne'. She was with her husband, Thomas Farley..
Little is known of Lady Jane - she is reputed to be the daughter of Richard Molyneux, the Earl of Sefton. The Molyneux/Sefton family group can be traced back in time as descending with and marrying into the lineage of the Plantagenet kings of England..

Tracing this line back through Lady Jane places this family in descendancy of Charlemagne and the Plantagenet kings of England..
