Both my Great Grandparents can trace their linage back to William the 1st, as well as down to Edmund de Langley. My Great Grandfather's family line then branches with de Langley's daughter. My Great Grandmother's line continuea through de Lamgley's son Richard.
William Sancroft Archbishop of Canterbury in the 17th Century is included in this line. Also in this 'tree" Is the family of North - including Marianne North, artist and world travellor, wose father was Frederick North MP for Hastings. She also left her painting of flowers in a lovely gallery in Kew Gardens London.- She financed the building of the gallery herself and the paintings were done on her trips around the world with her father.
My Great grandmother's tree begins with the Young family (also originally Jong, de Youg,) Sir William Young was stationed in the Carribbean. He was the 1st Baronet and Govenor of Tobago St Vincent, Antigua etc. He and his wife had nine children - all of who can be seen in a painting by Johanne Zoffany titled "The Young Family" It is magnificent and I have seen it in an art Gallery in Liverpool. Their ancestor was Jane Grey who married an eirlier Young. Jane was a niece of Lady Jane Grey the young girl who was chosed to be Queen after the death of Hery the V111's son. It was all a terrible scheme to get a Protestant into power instead of a Catholic queen and Lady Jane and and Her husband Lord Guildford Dudley were both beheaded on the same day.
This story is well known and well documented. The Grandaughter of Sir William Young, through his son (also Sir William Young - 2nd Baronet) and his wife Sarah Lawrence was Caroline Young who married Thomas Robson and My Great Grandmother was an issued in this line.
There are numerous members of the cloth in the family and some wonderful homes that belonged to some of the families.
I know it's said that half of England can trace their ancestry back to William the Conqueror, but I wonder if their ancestors have been as througher as mine in documenting them. I have been following up these trees since 1957 and am trying to get them all down so we can see who went to America, who ended up in South like my late Mother, who went out to New Zealand and Australia and even maybe who is still in the Carribbean. I know of one branch who went to Italy but unfortunately have all passed on before I could find someone to translate letters to and from there.
This is an ongoing research as I am often hearing from people who come up with something I never even thought of. Like my friend who is related to the Archbishop of Cantebury's family. I have been to England three time tracing histories, to Canada once to meet my Mother's brother(They were Canadians) also to Ireland to meet with my Fathers family. When I get to understand how to do it properly I will put some rather nice pictures of the English ancestors and relations up as well as the Canadian and the Irish families - who have all gone now.
Thank you Jennifer Leigh Marais.
