I think Josiah is highly speculative as the first name, and probably incorrect. The ONLY evidence I have ever found for that name is a second hand transcription of the Hatchett family history from Edward Hatchett, one of John Hatchett's great grandsons (so "Josiah" William Bass would bee his gg grandfather). But there are three separate Hatchett family histories written by various great grandsons of John Hatchett. They all agree that John's wife was a Bass, but disagree on her father's given name. One says her father was Josiah Bass, another says Edward Bass, and the third does not venture a first name. These are family stories written somewhat distant in time from the facts. Most people presume (although even the evidence is circumstantial) that Elizabeth Bass, wife of John Hatchett, was the daughter of William Bass whose plantation was adjacent to that of John Farley's, where John Hatchett served his indenture (see a map I made to show this http://www.hatchetts.com/hatchett/maps/chesterfield1.html ). That William Bass (whose profile this is) always shows up in documents as William Bass, not Josiah Bass. Given that, I think he should have the given name William, with Josiah possibly as an alternate name (aka) since the only evidence of that name is that family history which should not be given a lot of weight on this point.
