Even in the mid-1900s, we had robber barons. They were plentiful in the 1920s to 1950s, and even 1960s the term was used for those in the military-industrial complex (MIC). They were the ones behind the arming for WWII, Korean and the Vietnam Wars.

Thanks. I added a line about how it was repopularized after the Great Depression.
