Hello Jadranka

Thank you for uploading the pages of your book that lists the names of the people in El Shatt, and where they came from. I have not been able to find my mother-in-law's family in those lists (or the name of a friend of theirs who went on to live in Australia). How complete do you think those lists are? And where would I be able to trace other lists/records if they exist?

Thanks
Celia

There were 30,000 refugees in El Shatt. My list contains only those ones from my area (approx 6000). But, in that book they are also providing info
on where other people came from and where you can find (or they founf ) information. I did not scan those pages, but will do.

I am also interested in my relatives and also my wifes family of whom all were in the camps for some while.
Of the names I checked the ones I was expecting were not there shown but as you note can be based upon from where they came from or was in which area of the camp they were?
The dates I assume are birthdates? and the 'p ' names relate back to dead fathers or grandfathers name?

Yes David, p refers to fathers who were dead at the time.
I am strugling to come up with a good way to present this list. I have listing for all of the villages from Mkarsko primorje (Makarska region) - it looks like just from Podgora 1200 people were there (out of 1800 at the time).

Should we create a list for each place (it will be hard to edit list of 1200 entries), should we do them in batches?
So, if you have any good ideas, please help.
Alex Moes has already entered one page, but there is lot more to do.

So, please anyone interested in helping, join in.
I still have pages I have not scanned yet.

I would be very willing to transcribe the lists in any manner that you recommend, but unfortunately only in a month's time.

Celia, that is great.
There is no chance we can finish this in a month, so just let us know when you are available.
Also, if you have any suggestion how to go about it, to make ie easier to find people, please put your ideas forward.

Possibly all names Alphabetical on Excel spread sheet with columns for village,current status and country , ages and other features.
Then anyone can filter surname and village if necessary to speed locate a person.
With my interest of Radojkovich
this family names occurs in at least 3+ villages
Podgora
Boga Moje
Loviste

Thanks Jadranka, old age setting in. I will follow up with additions to the list.

Kindest regards, Eddy

FYI everyone, i've started added names to the list again (actually entering them onto the connected El Shatt - Internees Project).
I'm using excel this time to create the list and then cutting and pasting onto Geni. I'm aiming to do about a page a day which should get thru the list in a week or so - assuming i don't get distracted by any other shiney objects.

I reorganised this page today, somehow the list of people was in the middle of the description of the history of the camp.
Reads a lot better now, i think :)

I found my great grand parents and my grandfather's sister today on the list.
Still no sign of your relatives David, but i'm only up to page 41, if i find them i'll let you know.

The page saved as "cimg6725" has K.S. after the name of Ljubica KRŽANIĆ (half way down left hand column of page 42).
Can anyone tell me what "K.S." means?

I have looked through the book and cant find anything explaining what that is
This is http://www.geni.com/people/Ljubica-Kr%C5%BEani%C4%87-Cerezatti/3549..., she was born in 1882

BTW, Ljubica's photo is from El Shatt (see the tent behind her)

I figured out what KS is - Ljubica was married to person from POdgora and this is where she was evacuated from, but she was born in Kastel Stari ->K.S.

Okay, good sleuthing. Curious that they decided to record that info for her but not anyone else.

Because everyone else on that list was from Makarska region

5/9/2012 at 6:18 PM

So it's actually a note from the author of the book rather than something that was recorded in the camp in 1942?

List of people in El Shatt taken from family histories and for Makarska region from the book 'Makarski primorci u zbjegu 1943-1946' by Velimir Urlic, published 2003.
The title of the book says 'Refugees from Makarska region', there are other publication for other areas

did the two el shatt projects get merged?

Private User
3/12/2015 at 10:58 PM

Yes Alex
We waited for you to come back and finally decided to merge them
as it was becoming unmanageable
It would be good to have you back helping here, cousin!

3/12/2015 at 11:40 PM

I never left, just got distracted for "little" while.

Glad you merged them as it was a bit unwieldy before even if we had a good reason for it.

What am i doing again, trawling the list looking for Geni matches, if i recall correctly?

I know my grandma and granfather met in El Shatt and fall in love. Where can I find that list so I can find out with whom did my grandma end up there?

Thank you cousins :)

As far as Geni goes your best bet is the list at the bottom of this page https://www.geni.com/projects/El-Shatt-WWII-refugee-camps/1065

Use Control+F buttons on your PC to bring up the search function then type in a name.

Once you find a record the only real indication of connections is the camp ID, they were just sequential so a family group driving at the same time should all be numbered in order from head of family to youngest.

If one of your family members names is on the list in blue click on it :)

I couldn't resist having a look myself :)

* 22254 VELA Janje ž Marinka, 1913
* 22255 VELA Paško Marinka, 1933
* 22256 VELA Neli Marina, 1938

* 22260 VELA Matija ž Pave, 1894
* 22262 VELA Dobrila Pave, 1928
* 22262 VELA Irma Pave, 1922

So Tekla and siblings Marinko and Matija. The other names are likely close relations also
