Welcome to the Geni Curator project!

Feel free to add your name in any sections you wish. I based the divisions those used by the UN (I thought that very appropriate). If you don't know where your country fits, please refer to this page.

Also, feel free to remove yourself from the project all together if you so wish.

Thanks! Just to reiterate, the regional breakdowns are those set-forth by the United Nations. We can alter them from there when we get a little more settled.

I have never known Zambia and Zimbabwe regarded as being in Eastern Africa. Southern or Central. Placing them in Eastern Africa is news to me -doesn't sit right with me, despite the UN subregions!

Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – often included in Southern Africa, and formerly of the Central African Federation
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Africa

Maybe I have to move with the times!!

Right, it's a bit weird. I think we'll have to modify it for our own use, yet for now, lets stick with it until we get up and running. Then you folks can have a go at it.

Well done Victar!
I would like to be the respresentative for the former Indian Subcontinent, which encompasses, Pakistan, India & Bangladesh. Unfortunately I am not able to access the link page.

Well done Victar, this is what I meant, we are here to help people so why not show ourselfs to the public.
I realise that not everyone wants to be publicly listed and I very much respect this, but for people who dont mind this is great.
Maybe a tip for others, I have edited my profile page so that it does not show that much information about myself anymore.
And if the dare to come near me anyway I have a Rottweiler and a baseball-bat ready :)

June,
East Africa is not so strange as Mozambique used to be Portuguese East Africa and it extends right down to the Swziland and South African borders - much further south than Zambia and even Zimbabwe.
Just an observation.

Private User, curators are not part of Geni's mgmt team, not even paid employees. The set of preferred skills are listed in http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/Curators .

If people have any suggestions for better formatting, people let me know.

Jeannette, can you please summarize the above in 25 words or less? My feeble brain is unable to comprehend anything longer than that.

6/19/2012 at 11:58 AM

Curators havent always existed, and our profiles dont show our Curatorship dates. I joined Geni 10 Jul, 2007.

6/19/2012 at 12:04 PM

Curator since Oct 29, 2010 according to my inbox

6/19/2012 at 12:07 PM

I joined Geni as a user on February 15, 2007.

I became a Curator on August 24, 2010.

David:I think she said "Thank You" to all those curators and others who HELP and is thankful that a good number of those who weren't really serious about genealogy (or were trouble makers) are gone.

And I think she asked if people's start date with Geni could be shown on their profiles (something that only curators can see now).

6/19/2012 at 2:16 PM

Curators are users and have the same privacy options as any other Geni member. Just a note. I joined Geni in 2007, became more active in 2010, and was invited to curate in September 2010.

Salute, Jeanette :-)
I can't remember - It's been a year or two. I think January 2011. Erica or Pam or Jadra - might remember better, as they were involved in my on-boarding :-)

Sharon: January 13th 2011 ;-)

We got the first 5 curators working silently on August 19th 2010 for a few days until it was announced to the public and already on the 24th we got the second round.

My profiles are no more "trustworthy" than someone else's. Curating on Geni is a different role from profile management.

I look for the sourced icon as an indicator for trust, which I accept before an unsourced field.

Ivan, thanks for the welcome! I am looking for somewhere to put up any Zimbabwean information I manage to decifer from the files that our wonderful mormons have been allowed to release. These files are difficult to work with and generally people give up trying and there are many of them searching for their roots. There also seem to be a lot of us working independantly to collect this information. The Rhodesian Diaspora has left many of us consious of the great need to conserve our historical documentation.
In Zimbabwean terminology, East Africa has always referred to Tanganika, Uganda and Kenya. Even Mozambique on the East Coast will not fall into that category I am not arguing the UN's demarkation lines, just suggesting that an exception be made here. It is extemely unlikely a Zimbabwean will go a site that says East Africa to look for the information they are so desperate for.
I stumbled onto this site ... if anyone cant point me in the right direction, will be grateful

10/20/2014 at 10:29 AM

Sharon Doubell should be able to help you. She's in South Africa and knows more about Zimbabwe than most of us.

10/21/2014 at 12:58 AM

Thanks for the alert, Hatte Blejer (absent until Nov 1). Welcome to the Southern African pat of the tree, Romy Knight. Try these two projects:
http://www.geni.com/projects/Rhodesia-and-Nyasaland-Zambia-Zimbabwe... & http://www.geni.com/projects/Pioneers-and-Early-Settlers-Rhodesia-a.... I'll send you an invite to both of them, & alert Private User, our Zimbabwe expert, to come and help you.
Yell if you need more input. Once you've settled in, please let me know what you think we should be doing to attract the rest of the Zimbabwean diaspora to Geni.

Have Hugh this morning will catch up later

Magic, thanks Sharon. I have contacted June Barnes but glad for the invites. I didnt know about the first site.
Zim genealogical info is sparse and spread all over the place. If it could all be condensed into one place with referral back to the original source, I think they will come. I have access to a few meeting sites for ex Zimbabweans/Rhodesians who will probably be willing to let me put up a pointer back to Geni, but still need to do a lot of work to give them something to look at.

Fine by me. Cooling period over until next time☺
In my Varsity years all of the Zims studied in Potch or somewhere in SA. I had a very good friend.
So yes from me.

I have set up a project in response to Romy Knight 's contact and we seem to have a project that is working well for the purpose

10/22/2014 at 4:08 AM

Great - let's add it to the http://www.geni.com/projects/South-Africans-Geni-Landing-Site-WELKO... SA Project index as well - so it can be advertised there too.
