We encourage people to jump in & help us on the SA projects. Don’t worry about not getting the formatting right – that’s easily fixed.

For starters:
Click the EDIT button on the ‘About’ section on the project page to open the document for you to write in. (You need to be a Collaborator to do this)

= = makes a big heading.
== == makes a smaller heading.
=== === makes an even smaller one.
''' makes bold
* makes a list
> makes an indent

To create a hypertext link (the blue writing you can click on) to a Geni profile page or to another internet site, put the URL (page address) in hard brackets with the text you want to show a couple of spaces after the link. Eg put into [http://www.geni.com/people/Sharon-Doubell/60000000057765846 CEO of Camels R Us] – This will show as a blue ‘click-on’ link, reading only ‘CEO of Camels R Us.’

Excellent Sharon:)

Always remember the commands need to be in pairs

for italics ''Italics''

For a double indent >>
For a secondary bullet **

Have fun!

# makes a numbered list

Was just adding that in for extra use value, Capt Marv - you'll know everything and more on it already ;-)

Ah, but I did learn
##

**

:
::: I was using > and >>

You never know what you can learn - thanks

I agree Richard!

Another thing to remember - if you want a paragraph break you need to use the paragraph symbol or a double space.

A silly question: if * makes a list, how do make a *?

The * has to be at the beginning of a line with a double space before it. If you use it in mid line then it works in the usual way. I think! Will go and test first - yes works!

Hi hi,
I am but a novice. Please could someone advise me how to put a LIST of names into alphabetical order on Geni, keeping the list format.
Many thanks,
Sally :)

Sally - it has to be done manually - no auto route I'ma afraid.

How to add a link is explained in the attached document - [http://media.geni.com/p13/d7/9d/f2/e0/5344483a959d6ac3/adding_links... '''Adding links to Geni profiles in projects.''']

Try using ===== for small print grey

or use <span style="font-size:10px;line-height:1em;"> closing with <span/> after the text you want smaller; play with different values of font size - 10px/12px etc.; -

there is a lot to be learnt at http://www.geni.com/projects/Geni-s-Project-Plaza/26544 and http://www.geni.com/projects/Wicked-Wiki/26865

And for all your questions at a more in depth level - take a look at the "Working with Projects' project: https://www.geni.com/projects/Working-with-Projects/12487

Remember when I first joined a project, the fear of messing it up.

TIP, if you make a mistake, do not panic, CLICK CANCEL to restore as was.

What backup security do we have in project text ?

:-) Good point Shaz. We can easily revert the text to a previous 'saved' situation.

If you don't get the formatting quite right - another user will always come along and adjust it - you'll still have saved a lot more work by adding the information.

As with all collaborative endeavours you weigh up the good that people will do by joining and helping, against the couple of errors that are easily fixed. It's a far bigger advantage to us all to have people come and be prepared to make mistakes than to have everyone too scared to help.

Terry Jackson (Switzer) on how to put a larger version of the project photo into your project as well:

- Go to 'full size' picture and copy that url: eg https://www.geni.com/images/missing_image.png

and paste into project main page but remove "https:" and replace "original" with either "medium" or "large" and surround this all with {{ }}
eg {{//media.geni.com/p13/06/6b/c2/42/5344484136177ee1/provinces_of_france_large.jpg?hash=d0ce0bdac5b40ac5d6e7a5825b94e2c6cc01403ced629ff0c2d5a98436e86faa.1745996399}}

Sharon Doubell I've added some other projects that you may find helpful here:
https://www.geni.com/discussions/106309?msg=1113849

:-)

Umm, I'm a complete beginner, perhaps a rare beast these days. For instance, I've clicked on 'reply' and have this box to type in but I've no idea where my message will end up. Should I have clicked on 'Start a new discussion'?

I'm here because I want to add a name to the sundry list. The starter kit suggests clicking on the edit button. I see two, on the right side but neither seems to give me a box to type in, so I can't even open the door to the pool, let alone jump in.

Any IT-kindergarten teachers out there, please?

Which 'sundry list' do you want to add to?

This discussion offers a lot of in formation on how to format wikis, but I cannot find any instructions on how to add a profile to a project. Clicking on <edit> opens the text box for the overall project. Where and how do I add a profile of my ancestor?

I've decided to take a creative writing course to refresh my skills since English college courses were too long ago to mention! Haha, I haven't been successful begging my big sis to join us in GENI to wite our profiles for us as she has English PhD. I sent her a horrid write up on one of our ancestor's, she just corrected the one and said I'm not that awful, she just tweaked it a bit and emailed it back, so that backfired on me!! Too bad, because she's a talented writer and I'm a left brain. Will do my best, hope the course will improve my skills. Thank you for all the tips.

Starter Kit for British Settlers post 1820 for Cholwich family from Devon, England

Post the link.

What I really need is the link to the lists of post 1820 Settlers to South Africa.. please

Best hope of getting that would be by putting it on a Discussion from the 1820 Settler Project.
