I assume it's because no-one had time to enter it. It's not like we're getting paid for a living to make updates here (at least I'm not). Also, in many cases you start with base level info (birth date, name, birth place), including variant spellings, but you may not necessarily have a "story" beyond that at first, other than "this is a human male who was born and died on this date".
Thanks Richard for your thoughts.
The profile was entered 4 years ago and has 15 managers. No-one has had any time since. OK.
This profile has a source so it's not that bad. I'm not getting at this profile in particular. Just in general maybe to encourage some About information on profiles would be really useful - even if it's only a clue where to look for more info.
Yes we are all volunteers whether curator, Pro, Plus or Basic. It's remarkable what we have achieved. We can still strive for more.
Hello Richard I see we are 8th cousins through the Crowell Family. I went through the Josselyn Profiles yesterday and made some corrections that I had. Profiles lines have been MP and lots of Merges since I added them. Their is lots of Information available on these Familys . When I get a chance I will see what I can do.
Richard
As David said there is a discrepancy that when you are in 'Edit' for the Profile the entry field for 'Also Know As' shows up on the Profile as 'Nicknames'
This is the Proper place for now to put Alternate names or even nicknames, they should be searchable when in this field, if they were only in the 'About Me' section they would not come up in a search. I am pretty sure Geni is planning on having the two separate fields.
In genealogy (and GEDCOM) "nickname" and "also known as" are two different items, used differently if I understand it correct.
We did however ask Geni to rename the "nicknames" field to "also known as" partly because of the way Geni used it ,- as an alternative name which also goes into the search engine for profile names.
It was best to label it "also known as" to tell that this field can and should be used for full names, like "Bill Clinton" instead of just "Bill" which again belongs in a nickname field which should not be indexed in a search engine for names. Unfortunately the field is not renamed all places in Geni.
In the long run we should have BOTH "also known as" and "nicknames" in Geni, and then as a dynamic list where you can add as many alternative names as you want, with a classification of name (birth, also known as, nick, immigrant etc) and optional information like source citation and data/date-range.
Geni Does have much greater possibilities than other sites < I agree with that and have been involved with genealogy for 50 plus years!. The ability to add the correct facts is their if you want to., but missed merged profiles and bad data needs a lot of attention. Cleanups I see can take a Lot of time.,only to be missed merged again with the wrong data. Citations and Proofs in the Edit (facts) sections is a great place to add and compare information for serious genealogists. GENI is by far, the Best format of any other Website ,but it has a way to go. I'm sure it will happen, I see a Lot of Good work Done by "Curators" I watch. It takes a lot of time for Research by Curators to MP a profile and I respect that work being done as Volunteers.
