Hatte Blejer (absent until Nov 1) researching Petticrew and Kenney. There's some debate as to whether Petticrew are from Ireland or Scotland and whether they were Huguenots. Regardless, my great grandmother, Mary Petticrew, was a descendant of several families of those who settled in Pennsylvania and Virginia (where land was cheaper) in the late 18th century.

Based on what I have read this week about the so-called Scotch-Irish immigration to Pennsylvania and from there to Virginia and points south, my Petticrew family was from Ireland but was either (1) a Norman family that settled in Scotland earlier or (2) a French Huguenot family that fled to Scotland and from there to Ireland. The term Scotch-Irish was used in America to describe the 200,000 immigrants during the 1700s who left Ireland and came to America. Mostly Presbyterian. From Ulster. They had been settled in Northern Ireland in the 1600s by the English rulers. The "Ulster Scots" included Border Scots, English, and French Huguenots. See this website on the Pettigrew surname.
