Was it Hester Cooke?

Well, the first successful to settle probably were her son (who came first-not sure about him) and then herself. There were folks that tried before them in the the Floridas and Carolinas in the 16th century... but they were not successful.

How about in Canada or among the explorers? Were they settlers? Any at Jamestown?

I looked at the dates on the Colonial American Huguenots I follow and Hester Cooke (Le Mahieu) was here earlier.

What about c.1562 Jean Ribault, French naval officer, who led an Expedition to the America`s and is credited for founding Fort Caroline (present day Jacksonville, Florida) He was killed by Spanish Soldiers near St. Augustine, Florida in c.1565

Does he have a Geni profile?

This is what I was wondering - Huguenots among the explorers from Spain.

Or against them.)

Strange, I find no Profile on Geni for him. Apparently, Spain was against he and his men being there.
If The articles are acurate,
In 1513, Spanish Governor and Explorer from Puerto Rico, Juan Ponce de leon, claimed the Region, where St. Augustine sits today, as Spain Territory.
Within the article, some Pirate mischief is mentioned as well.

One must be careful, when walking where Pirates have tread, as you will find tall tales abounding.

This is fun stuff! You know we have pirate projects?

Perhaps Jean Ribault has no family on Geni currently. But if we can find some good sources, perhaps worth building his tree.

The Data I replied to you about, I see on Wikipedia. I know people, especially College Professors, tend to shy away from that site as a source.

Wkipedia is getting better. As anywhere else - including the Geni site -it becomes about source data and good references.
