When I log in and go to my Merge Centre a name "Arne NN" is listed and I am asked to approve or otherwise a merge.

I am not a manager of anyone called Arne NN, no one of that name appears on my family tree and on requesting the path to show the connection between myself and Arne NN the reply is that there is NO connection.

So why is he listed among my possible merges?

Ken, can you tell me which of these profile appear in your merge center
http://www.geni.com/search?search_type=people&names=Arne+NN

and also do you know to which category your merge center is set?
is it
my relatives

followed by me

managed by me

manage by my collaborators

hope that's clear enough
:-)

He is listed as the father of Stener Arnesen and Arne Arnesen and managed by Lars Fosse - does this help?

As far as setting a category for the merge centre I have never set anything but over the past years all entries seem to have been people from my family tree. How do you set the criteria or how can I check these criteria?

Follow up. I see what you mean. The list is set to show My Relatives but if I change this to Managed by me then Arne NN disappears. However I cannot see how he can be my relative.

OK I can now see that this profile Arne NN
is your direct 10th great grandfather so that's why it appears in your my relatives mere center
did the other profiles is the same person or juts a similar name?
can you post or send me the link to the suggested merge?

hope that's clear enough

:-)

I have rejected the merge suggestion on Arne NN and xx because the sons Arne Arnesen does not match (one of them have a son born in ca 1580 while the second Arne is born himself in ca 1570).

Areas with patronymic names (ending in -sen/-son) is very problematic when it comes to automatic tree matches, - most of the tree match suggestions from Geni are not correct, so be very careful.

Technically both the Arne NN profiles are added just because of the patronymic name Arnesen on the children, telling us that the fathers name was a variant of Arne, - so technically they should probably not be added at all because there is probably no source on this person, - just guesswork based on naming traditions.

I have spent some time on my tree in geni and my own database and have at last sorted out the problem. I have my 10th grandfather down as Arne Unknown but he did have 2 sons Arne (1570) and Stener (1572). I was thrown by the NN and did not concentrate on the children. Is there some significance i n the use of NN as surname?

That merge is no longer listed.

Personally i try to use ?? since it is more international and since ? means the same in all alphabets (as far as I know).

Not so many know what Nomen nescio means...

NN means Unknown and is very common in names when the name is unknown, but you can use ?? too. Please don't use the husbands lastname as the wifes last name unless you are very sure she used the husbands last name. And us genealogists don't use married names as persons main/primary last name att all, so me personally don't like the use of the husbands last name in the wifes last name field.
