Can anyone tell me categorically who the leader of the Edenburg Trek into Rhodesia was? According to S.P. Olivier, in his book Many Treks made Rhodesia, it is SAMUEL GIFFORD. However, I have the transcript of an interview with Alice Ramsey Cannell conducted in August/September 1970, with a Zimbabwean archivist, in which she CATEGORICALLY states that her father, CLIFFORD RAMSEY CANNELL, was the Leader.

Any comment of this and/or references would be hugely appreciated!

Oh, btw - I've just put in as much of the Bantu royal family as far back as I can - and they have roots in this area too.

Still off your point Caroline, but just as an admin note - I've hypertexted links to the names Rhodes and Shaka, mentioned in the project's text.

In die Afrikaanse boek op bl 183 aan die einde van bylae 6 staan geskrywe: Cannell has informed me that he has forwarded a list of names of the Edenburg Trek to Mr. Rhodes. M.J. MARTIN

Thanks for the references June .... I have previously seen these. I have also been in touch with Ken Markham. I still cannot get a CATEGORICAL yes or no. I am doing the ground work for a movie script so my research HAS to be historically correct!. Perhaps I should try and reach Bertoli again - though I do recall writing to her many years ago. To find those emails amongst my mess of papers!!!

I have just received absolutely WONDERFUL material on the Edenburg trek ... Reading through it all, I wonder if this trek was not lead by a "committee" of two or three, maybe even four people??? (It is also the only trek that is not named after an individual, taking it from the point of origin, Edenburg)
Any comments on this possibility ????

Can you load the material Caroline - sounds like a fair solution with the trek not being named after a person.

Caroline - I have given the Edenburg Trek a page of its own - http://www.geni.com/projects/Edenburg-Trek-to-Rhodesia-1894 and added you as collaborator. You could add documents to the project if you have them! How exciting!

Great Idea to have a page of its own!

I'm having immense problems loading the non-photgraphic documents I received last night. I will try in the morning again. I'm not sure whether it's the void in that side of my brain that controls "new-age-tech", or, a genuine problem somewhere!

I will start writing something using the notes I have from my great aunt, and the ones received of the Giffords - it all makes an exciting yet poignant story!!

Are you able to save documents as pdf's? They tend to load easily.

Just thought I'd let you know that I am not doing nothing ......(about 50 emails later), I will be meeting with Gray King, a descendant of the Giffords, in December where we will compare notes, material and other scraps of paper to assemble some sort of "historical story" on the Edenburg trek with a lot of references etc. By all accounts, this will be worth the wait!!! :))))

That is so exciting! I look forward to the results!
